Prizefighter: The featherweights

October 29, 2011

Prizefighter always manages to produce an enthralling night of boxing. Tonight it is the featherweights at the York Hall battling for the £32,000 prize. The draw for the night will take place at the beginning of the broadcast in the centre of the ring.

Unbeaten Lee Glover will take on Choi Tseveenpurev

Lee Jennings will take on George Jupp

Ian Bailey will take on Rhys Roberts

Barrington Brown will take on unbeaten
Troy James

-

Choi Tseveenpurev is the favourite for the night just three weeks after his 40th birthday. A strong puncher he has a KO percentage of 60%. Another advantage for Choi will be his Prizefighter experience when he fought in the Super Featherweight tournament last year. His opponent Lee Glover has an unbeaten record with two knockouts in his career.
Prediction: Choi to stop him in 2

-

Round 1: Frantic start from the both of them. Glover is landing with jabs but Choi is swinging and landing harder shots. He wobbles him halfway through the round. With a minute left he lands an overhand right to the temple which knocks Choi down. Glover has to win the last two rounds now presumably.

Round 2: Choi is finding success with his left hooks and overhand rights. Cracking overhand right from Choi and the ref stops it. Great performance from Choi. Stunning power and accuracy.
-
Result: Choi Tsveenpurev wins in Round 2 by stoppage
-
Choi 10 -   10
Glover 8 -   8

Lee Jennings is the shortest fighter in the competition at 5’2. Although his record of 5-2 is perhaps a bit unfair he beat Chris Truman in his last fight and a good amateur pedigree. His opponent is the tallest in the competition at 5’9. How well can Jupp use this advantage?
Prediction: Jupp will use his height to good effect and win by decision.

-

Round 1: Jennings is the betting favourite.  Quick start from both guys. Both landing good shots. Jennings started off better but it’s Jupp ending the round in control. How do you split this?
-

Round 2: Once again Jennings starts the round better. Massive cut has opened up above his left eye right above his eye. Terry O’Connor takes a long look at that. Jupp seems to have taken over the round. Nice boxing from Jupp. The referee has stopped it because of the cut.
-
Result: George Jupp wins in round 2 by stoppage

Jupp 10 -   10
Jennings 10 -   10

The third fight of the night is between Ian Bailey and Rhys Roberts. Ian Bailey has a record of 7-7 but his lack of power may hinder him in this tournament.  Bailey has been in with some notable names, both Carl Frampton and Lee Selby defeated him. Roberts is the second favourite for the tournament. A nickname of ‘Pure Silk’ suggest Roberts is a slick mover, but once again lacks power with only two knockouts.
Prediction:
Roberts easily outboxes Bailey to a decision
-
Round 1: Roberts is looking very slick with his quick movement. Bailey is just being beaten to the punch. Not much too say really.
-

Round 2: Bailey is making this tough for Roberts by getting inside and trying to have a tear-up with him. Bailey has really got himself back into this.
-
Round 3: Roberts needs to get back to the quick, elusive style he had in round 1. Roberts is doing the cleaner work while Bailey is trying to spot him working. Both land good shots around the two minute mark.
-

Result: With scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 30-27 the winner is Rhys Roberts

Roberts 10 9 10 29
Bailey 9 10 9 28

Final fight in the first round is unbeaten Terrifying Troy James who has 9 wins with no losses. He will be up against Barrington Brown who has come down from the Lightweight limit for his last fight to compete in Prizefighter.
Prediction: Troy James will keep his unbeaten record with a decision win.
-
Round 1: Brown has come out fast, swinging hard. James has really took over the rest of the round after that.
-
Round 2: Another cracking round. Both landing shots but
James once again takes the rounds probably due to his better work.
-
Round 3: Both come out firing shots against the ropes. Once again
James is doing the harder work. It’s been a close fight though and both men have worked so hard.
-
Result: With scores of 30-28, 29-28 and 29-28 the winner is Troy James

Barrington 9 9 9 27
James 10 10 10 30

Semi Finals

The first semi final is the one I am most looking forward to. Choi Tseveenpurev is the tournament favourite and we saw in the first quarter final the power + speed he has. He will be up against George Jupp who looked impressive in the first round with his good precision boxing.
Prediction: Choi Tseveenpurev’s power will see him through with a decision after a knockdown.
-
Round 1: A bit of added drama to the fight as the lights above the ring have gone off. They continue regardless.
Choi has started this fight slower. He hasn’t got into this. Maybe Jupp’s added height is causing him problems.
-
Round 2:
Choi has been told by his corner to ‘turn it up.’ That he does with his looping shots. He is trying to back Jupp up and keep him on the ropes where he can unload his punches.
-
Round 3: A bit of controversy and tough decision for the referee at the start of the round.
Jupp slips  and when he is on the floor, Choi lands a punch. The referee just gives him a stern warning. Choi is a now become the dominant fighter. He has dragged Jupp into a war. Great performance from both fighters. Jupp showed great heart and boxing skills.
-
Result: With scores of 29-28, 29-28 and 29-28 the winner is Choi Tseveenpurev

Choi 9 10 10 29
Jupp 10 9 9 28

The person that will come up against Choi will be Troy James or Rhys Roberts. Rhys Roberts has to be the favourite going into the fight with his slickster style while James may have expanded too much energy in his first fight
Prediction: Roberts will take the fight by decision
-
Round 1: Roberts starts the round the quickest however once again James comes into the fight later in the round. Definitely a really impressive stylist.
-
Round 2: Roberts  has too much quality for James. Roberts lands a brilliant shot about midway through the round. James perhaps expanded too much energy in his previous fight. His work rate just isn’t the same.
-
Round 3: Can’t see much James can do, unless he can knock Roberts out which looks unlikely. Roberts is still moving well landing his shots. James has had his best round with nothing to lose. He has really gone for Roberts.
-
Result: With scores of 29-28 29-28 and 30-28 the winner is Rhys Roberts

Roberts 10 10 10 30
James 9 9 10 28

Final

If there is anyone in the whole field who seemed the most likely to defeat Choi it was Rhys Roberts. Roberts is a very slick fighter who enjoys fighters who come onto him, attacking as Choi will. I hope Choi wins and if he lands a bomb I think it’s likely he will stop Roberts.
Prediction: Choi will knock Roberts out in the second.
-
Round 1: 18 years between the two of them. As expected Choi is the aggressor. Neither fighter landing a lot of shots in the first two minutes.
Choi seems to shake Roberts at the 2 minute mark which probably is the reason he gets the round..

-
Round 2: Very deep cut above Choi’s ear. Weird position, looks bad though. Choi is using all the tricks he had learned over the years. He is forcing his weight onto him, throwing punches in clinches, forcing him off balance. He just isn’t letting Roberts box in his usual style. Can’t see Roberts winning this. He only has two knockouts in his career.
-
Round 3: Choi
is definitely the one pushing the pace. Roberts just hasn’t been able to get into this. Choi has dominated this and is definitely the champion unless there is some really bad judging.

Choi 10 10 10 30
Roberts 9 9 9 27

Result: With scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 30-27 the winner and Prizefighter Champion is Choi Tseveenpurev
