Huck Retains WBO Cruiserweight Title Via 5th Round TKO
In a pretty much one sided affair, Marco Huck now (30-1 23 KO’s) dominated Matt Godfrey (20-2 10 KO’s) and finished him off with a 5th round TKO in the Messehalle, Erfut, Thuringen, Germany. Most of the fight saw Huck walk down Godfrey and pressure him while trying to land overhand rights. Godfrey landed a few jabs near the body, but not many clean blows. Often the fighters would need to be seperated due to holding and clinching.
Huck sporting Emerald green trunks was able to take full command in round 2 of the fight. He got Godfrey near the ropes and dropped him with a well timed overhand right. Godfrey was able to beat the count before the round ended. Godfrey was able to get his legs back, but was dropped in round 3 to the canvas by a lowblow, he would take some time but not the 5 minutes alloted. The rest of the contest just saw Godfrey trying to penetrate Huck’s high guard without much success. In round 5, Huck again set up Godfrey with an overhand right and than landed combinations that dropped Godfrey and almost knocked him out of the ring. It appeared that someone from Godfrey’s corner actually pushed him a little to keep him inside. After beating the count, Huck came in to finish the unsteady Godfrey and at the time of 2:18 of Round 5 the referee Genaro Rodriguez stopped the fight.
